Screen capture software allows you to easily make a movie of whatever is on your computer screen. Often this is done with a PowerPoint but it can be any software/website. These movies can be used for training, review, showcase, etc.
To get started you will need to get the software. We recommend you use one of two tools:
Both tools are free. CamStudio creates movies in the standard ".avi" format that is easily edited in Windows Movie Maker, Premier Elements, etc. Jing creates movies in "Flash" .swf format that is not easily editable without expensive software - therefore you'll need to be more careful when you record. Jing also has a 5 minute limit for recordings. If you need longer presentations you would either need to record in sections or use the trial version or purchase "Camtasia Studio" by TechSmith which is the professional standard for this kind of work.
To Use CamStudio:
Start the software
Set the Options:
Set Keyboard shortcuts to start and stop recording.
3. Select the area to be recorded (Full Screen, Window or Region)
Region is whatever are you choose. Window is the program (Firefox, Word, etc.) you select by clicking on it. Full Screen is well, the entire screen!
4. Connect microphone to computer
5. Start when ready.
The round, red button starts the recording. The blue square stops it.
Typically, these are the steps to record (after the above steps are completed of course):
Start the PowerPoint Show (from Beginning) so it goes full screen.
Use Alt-Tab to access Camstudio and start the recording.
Work your way through the PowerPoint to create the recording.
Use Alt-Tab to access Camstudio and stop the recording.
Wait while Camstudio creates the recording (watch the top of the Camstudio program for %)
To Use Jing:
When Jing is running you will see a yellow "sun" in the middle of the very top of your monitor:
Putting the cursor (arrow) over the "sun" opens up the choices
The button on the left starts the capture (recording)
The button in the center shows your history (not certain why)
The button on the right has all of the options/settings including to quit the program.
Jing Options:
The "check" closes the options
The "gears" are the available settings
The "?" is for "help"
The far right choice will quit the software.
Typically, these are the steps to record (after the above steps are completed of course):
